Het idee achter deze post is te starten vanuit een eenvoudige rechthoek.  Eigenlijk zou ik met een rechthoek een groot deel van mijn ontwerpen kunnen starten en mijn plan is om hier snel op terug te komen. Dit model is een basis die je eindeloos kan heruitvinden.  Zoals je kan zien heb ik reeds een aantal afleidingen in mijn hoofd die ik kan terug linken aan dit onderwerp.  Zodra de pasvorm goed is afgesteld op je lichaam kan je duizend kanten uit!

The main idea behind this post is to start from a rectangular shape.  Actually, I could use a rectangle to start many of my designs and I hope to share them with you very soon.  This shape you can reuse over and over again.  As you can see I already have a lot of diversions in my head that will link back to this topic.  Once the shape is perfectly adjusted to your body you can go a thousand directions!

1) This is my rectangle  with adjustments. Horizontal: 65cm * Vertical: 62cm – Dit is mijn rechthoek met de nodige aanpassingen.  Horizontaal: 65cm * Verticaal: 62cm

2) Trimmings diagonal  on fabric (45°)This will give it a nice stretch.  Trim neckline: 3cm – Trim armhole: 10cm.  – Boordjes schuin uit de stof knippen (45°) Dit zorgt voor een lichte rekbaarheid

3) Front and back are sewn together at the side and shoulders.  –  Voor- en achterzijde worden samengestikt op de zijnaad en schouders.

4) The armhole trimming.   –  Het armsgat met een boordje.

Easy Peplum Dress

Eindelijk zomer en tijd voor frisse zomerjurkjes!  Ik bevries wanneer we deze foto’s maken maar het kan me niet deren, ik ben al die regen en koude stilaan kotsbeu.  Het jurkje is rechttoe rechtaan met een elastiek bovenaan om alles op zijn plaats te houden.  Ik koos voor een exotische print in navy op witte katoen voile en dat maakt het eenvoudig combineren met gekleurde blazertjes of sjaals.  Omdat het stofje licht doorschijnend is heb ik een witte anti-statische voering gebruikt en dat zorgt meteen voor een gemakkelijke en mooie afwerking.  Om het geheel echt af te maken heb ik een peplum-ceintuur gemaakt maar eender welke ceintuur is goed als je niet van peplum houd.  Ik hoop dat je ervan geniet om dit jurkje te maken.  Eenvoudig en chic, dat is toch de bedoeling, niet?

Finally summer and there it is, my first dress!  I’m freezing as we are taking these pictures but I don’t care,  I’m just sick of all the rain and coldness.   It’s an easy straight dress with elastic trimming to keep everything at place.  The pattern exists of an exotic printed cotton in navy and white which makes it easy to combine with a bright colored blazer or scarf.  The fabric is somewhat transparent so I used a white anti-static lining, it’s actually easier to finish that way.  As a final touch I made a peplum belt in the same fabric but you can use any leather belt if you don’t like peplum.  I hope you enjoy making this.   Easy and chic, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

1)  Stitch the side seams from fabric and lining –  De zijnaden van bovenstof en voering worden dicht gestikt.

2) The fabric and lining are sewn together on the top. Reverse the fabric with the lining on the inside – De stof en de voering worden bovenaan dicht gestikt.  Keer de stof om met de voering aan de binnenzijde.

3) Stitch a tunnel at 4,5cm for the elastic band (elastic band width: 4cm ). Leave the tunnel open for 10cm at the center back to pull trough the elastic band. – stik een tunnel op 4,5cm van de rand voor de elastiek (elastiek breedte: 4cm)  Laat de tunnel 10cm open op de achterzijde om de elastiek door te rijgen.

4) Measure the length for the elastic band (above chest) and cut 4cm smaller. Pull the elastic waistband trough the tunnel with a safety pin.  Fix both ends of the alastic and close seam. – Meet de lengte voor de elastiek boven de borst en snij 4cm smaller. Trek de elastiek door de tunnel met een veiligheidsspeld.  Fixeer beide einden van de elastiek aan elkaar.

5) For my style I think the dress is to loose at the hem so I reduce width by 8cm on each side (= 32cm) – Voor mij mag de jurk best smaller onderaan dus ik versmal de zoom aan de zijde met 8cm(32cm in totaal)

6) Finish hemlines at 1cm+4cm.  The lining hemline: 1cm+ 1cm – Werk de zoom af op 4cm + 1cm.  De voering zoom: 1cm + 1cm

7) The peplum belt: fabric heigth: 50cm x fabric width, folded in 2 to create a tunnel for the elastic band.  Make a small hemline on both sides at 1cm + 1cm.  Use the same instructions as for the dress for the elastic. Sew on a hook and eye by hand – Peplum ceintuur: stofhoogte 50cm x stofbreedte, dubbelvouwen zodat er ook een tunnel ontstaat.  Zomen afwerken met een rolzoom 1cm + 1cm (of smaller).  Gebruikt dezelfde handleiding als bij het jurkje voor de elastiek.  Naai een haak en oog aan de binnenzijde om de ceintuur te sluiten.

Pimp up your dress!

Wanneer ik tijdens de koopjes iets mee gris durf ik wel eens impulsief te zijn alhoewel ik meestal twee keer nadenk alvorens iets aan te schaffen.  Dit jurkje heb ik in één of andere shopwoede gekocht zonder zelfs maar te passen, het was echt een koopje en de print was best schattig.  Toen ik het jurkje thuis aanpaste merkte ik dat de verschrikkelijk slechte pasvorm alles behalve flaterend was en dat ik eigenlijk nooit rondfladder in bloemenjurkjes.  Nu hangt het ding reeds een jaar in mijn kast zonder zelfs maar één keer aan te doen.  We zitten in een financiële crisis dus dacht ik om even economisch te zijn en mijn jurkje dan maar een tweede kans te geven.

When I buy clothes during sales I can be a little impulsive sometimes, although I normally consider twice if I absolutely need it.  This dress however I bought in a shopping rage without even fitting, just because of the lovely print and it wasn’t expensive.  At home I tried it on and the fitting was horrible!  Besides, I never wander around in sweet girly flower dresses.   So there it is, hanging in my wardrobe for over a year now without even wearing it once…  We’re in a financial crisis so it’s time to pimp up this dress and give it a new purpose.

A scetch for the new dress, my three year old daugther is lucky again!  Backlength: 26cm – Chest width: 30cm – Armhole: 12,5cm – Neckopening: 13cm

To see the proportions I shape the dress, this way I decide if the length of the skirt is in balance with the top.

I compare sizes with other dresses my daughter owns. I want to reuse the finished neckline to save time, the front and back are folded in half and everything is measured carefully.   Shoulder and sideseams are sewn together after cutting it at the right size.

The hemline will be reused for the skirt part of the new dress, this way I don’t need to make a new hemline.  The skirt will be gathered and stichted onto the top.

This is the result! I think I’ve done a good job and it didn’t take hours to sew.

Yes, I did it!

Voila! Ik ben gestart met mijn eigen ‘sew it yourself’ blog!  Het is die onvermijdelijke drang om mijn obsessie met patronen, stoffen, knopen, zakjes, zomen en welke details je ook maar kan terugvinden op een kledingstuk te delen met anderen.  Wat kan je verwachten?  Tja, ik ben een modeontwerpster en ik tracht bij te blijven met de laatste trends in modeland.  Het komt erop neer dat ik kledingstukken maak die een surplus bieden aan wat er reeds in mijn kleerkast hangt en dit zonder dagen achter mijn naaimachine te hoeven zwoegen.  Ik hou het simpel, (misschien niet altijd…) en ik bied alle tips & tricks aan om elk project tot een goed einde te brengen. Door jullie feedback probeer ik een forum te creëren voor iedereen met interesse in kleding en zonder angst om op het pedaal te duwen, van je naaimachine dus.  En uiteindelijk, de voldoening wanneer je zegt ‘dit heb ik gemaakt’ is onbetaalbaar.

Finally, I started my very own ‘sew it yourself ‘ blog!  I felt an inevitable drive to share my obsession for pattern design, fabrics, buttons, pockets, trimmings and everything else you can find on a peace of clothing.  What can you expect?  Well, I’m a fashion designer so I try to keep up to date with the latest trends.  Items that will add value to my wardrobe of everyday and won’t keep me behind my sewing machine for days, that’s what I’m looking for.  I’ll keep it easy, (maybe not allways…) and try to give you all the tips and tricks you need for a great result.  With your feedback I will try to make this a place for everyone with an interest for clothes and who is not afraid to push the pedal, of a sewing machine that is.  And finally, the fulfillment to say ‘this is made by me’ is priceless.
